Last week, in my little tucked away area in Westwood, I saw something that I still can’t believe I saw.
It was on one of those warm days last week – was a little bit windy.
I was standing outside my building, taking in a little sun and smoking a cigarette. Squirrels are all over here, so it wasn’t unusual to see one running down this patch of grass in front of my building.
What was unusual was to see a giant hawk trying to make a landing with his giant claws out ready to grab on to the squirrel.
The squirrel got away – made it under a bush. The hawk landed for a few seconds, saw me and flew away.
Actually, the size and the face on the hawk scared me a little. I had to jump back.
Thinking about it later, in all my years of city living, I have never seen anything like this.
Have you?

I did see something like this once.
Some winters ago, in Eden Park, I saw a hawk on the ground. It was a snowy day and all around the hawk was fur and I’m guessing the fur was from a squirrel. I suppose the hawk removed the fur from the squirrel before eating it.
The hawk didn’t seem scared of me at all. It was quite a sight.
Yes, I’ve seen you smoke a cigarette.
lar, next time offer your hawk a cigarette. maybe he’ll want to hang out.
Out in the sticks where I am this is pretty common.
Out here, even if you have a small dog, BEWARE! Those hawks will come down and get them!!
I’ve seen big, exotic looking birds a few times while walking in my riverside neighborhood. The big, red hawk I saw in Dayton stayed by himself. He left after a day or two. I’ve seen giant blue herons a few times, always near the bank of the river and never alone. None of them were smokers.
