Joseph-Beth Booksellers has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will close four of its stores—but the one here in Cincinnati will remain open. Click here to read more about it.
I’ve enjoyed going to Joseph-Beth over the years. I can almost spend an entire day there looking around, but Joseph-Beth and other chain bookstores like it over the years has forced smaller, privately owned bookstores to go under because they can’t compete. Now, even the chains are suffering.
I don’t want to think bookstores close because people are reading less. I want to think it’s this bad economy, but I’m not at all sure.

I give it about a year before they close all together. They can’t compete with Amazon.
I like this book store a lot but when you go in now, there are not that many customers. The traffice in the store is way down. I am hoping it stays open.
R.N. is correct. Amazon.com is now even hurting the chains. That’s why they call it the beast.
Beth, not sure when you visit Jospeh Beth in Hyde Park, but when I go in, mostly on the weekends, it’s packed with people.
one of my fave places to go. i hope it hangs on. makes my heart hurt to see any bookstore close, really. course, i still had a tv/vcr combo up until the other day.
