I run into him every few weeks, usually on Race Street. I still consider him a friend, but we don’t get together much anymore. Still, we keep pretending like that will change.
I saw him again early last week as I was coming out of the CVS Pharmacy. We made some small talk.
“Man, it’s been too long,” he said.
“Yeah,” I replied.
“Let’s get together soon.”
“Anytime you want.”
“You gonna have some time later in the week?” he asked. “Maybe we could have a few drinks.”
“That would be great,” I replied.
“I’ll call you in a few days,” he said.
Of course, that phone call never happened and I also didn’t call him to see if he still wanted to get together.
I’m sure we all do this kind of thing, but maybe next time this exchange takes place, I’ll just be honest.
“”You and I both know it’s never gonna happen,” I’ll say. “We’ve grown apart over the past few years and you really have no interest in getting together and frankly I don’t either. Let’s just wave at each other when we pass on the sidewalk and leave it at that.”
That’s what I should say but you’re right. Those words will never come out of my mouth. We’ll both keep pretending.
