Washington Park reopens today in Over-the-Rhine. Get there at ten this morning to see how good it looks or if you can’t, here’s a sneak peak.
I realize something had to be done with the old Washington Park. It always looked a little dirty and was a haven for drug dealers
Sometimes when I worked in downtown Cincinnati, I would walk to the park and eat my lunch there. Most of the time I felt safe, but sometimes I didn’t. Often when I would be eating my lunch, watching cops arrest drug dealers would be part of the “show.” The old Washington Park was never dull.
The park was also the hangout for a lot of homeless people. When I spent time there, I was constantly approached for change. I didn’t give out much of that, but I would hand out cigarettes freely.
I remember writing a short story once for Streetvibes about a homeless man who ended up dying on a park bench in Washington Park. I based it on a man I once talked to there. He didn’t die in real life. Now, years later, I wonder if he’s still around.
Maybe I’ll return to the new Washington Park this summer and see if I can find him. Of course that would be foolish. I kind of doubt if he’ll be hanging out there. I don’t think the “new” wants the “old” there anymore and I can’t help but wonder where the “old” is supposed to go now. That’s just how my mind works.
We’ll be back on Sunday will another post.
