  1. Well, it does sound like it would have been an interesting direction to take. Sorry it didn’t work out for you.

  2. I very much believe things happen for a reason. If you went to work for the railroad, you may not be writing today and I know how much you love that 🙂

  3. If “the plan” had happened, you would be out of a job now. Alls well that ends well.

  4. Not only has the term “shorthand” become almost obsolete, but,I assume, so has “amanuensis.” The demand for male secretaries has probably fallen drastically, if not disappeared completely. It’s nice that train travel still exists; it’s one of the best ways to travel when you have the time. That you eventually wound up using your “longhand” writing ability is fatefully ironic. Good for you.

  5. Agree with Tuck. Also need $$ as well as time. My dream is to board the “Empire Builder” Chicago-points west. Grandfather was a “male secretary” for the L&N in Latonia KY and was a shorthand whiz, using the Pittman(?) version. Got his family through the Depression with it. Never heard “amanuensis.” Once again, you expand my knowledge. Thanks.

  6. I sort of wished I had learned shorthand in school, seemed like a cool thing to learn. You can go on line on You Tube and learn it but I think a real teacher would be better. No point now anyway.
