Last Saturday, as one o’clock in the afternoon got closer and closer, the more I wished I had called Jan and Jim to reschedule our lunch date. If you live in this area—Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky—you know that the weather was crap with some snow, falling temperatures and strong wind gusts.
I’m not going to go into details about the neuropathy I have in my legs and feet as I think most of you know about it already. Having said that, this nerve damage makes it a bit difficult to walk even when the weather is decent. Walking in the wind and cold is truly a pain in the ass.
One o’clock rolled around and so did Jan and Jim. They pulled up in front of my building and off we went. Parking indoors at Newport on the Levee, we walked to Bar Louie and had lunch. Bar food on a day like last Saturday sounded pretty good to us.
After lunch, despite the strong wind, they took me to the Kroger on Madison Avenue in Covington to get my groceries. What a joy it was walking in that parking lot before and after getting groceries. Kidding, of course, but I did it.
Jim has a timer on his cell phone and took a picture of us in the cereal/oatmeal aisle at Kroger. That’s Jim, then Jan, then me. I got one of those items—cereal or oatmeal—in that aisle, but not both. I’m not telling which one I got as I believe some things in life need to remain a mystery.
Despite the horrible weather, it was a fun day and I’m proud of myself for not chickening out and cancelling. Sometimes you got to put up with stuff.
Today? Real snow, but I don’t have to put up with it. I did my running around yesterday, planning ahead a little bit. I’m proud of that too.
Old friends: I’ve known Jan for over 20 years now and Jim almost the same. I first knew them as girlfriend and boyfriend. They’ve been married for a long time now and I can’t imagine not having them in my life. I can’t always figure out why they put with the likes of me, but I’m glad they do.
