On Tuesday morning of this week, I signed a new lease for my apartment here in Covington, Kentucky. The old one wasn’t up until the middle of January, but the management was anxious to secure that I was going to stay—they like quiet tenants and I’m about as quiet as they come—so what the hell? I was going to renew it anyway.
In keeping things in perceptive, I have few complaints here. That wasn’t the case at my previous address in Covington. Living in that building wasn’t a great experience. Often times, it was horrible. Maybe I haven’t written a book about it (yet), but I’ve written plenty of blog posts and columns. You all know that.
In the almost ten months I’ve lived in my new living quarters, I’ve come to know a lot of my neighbors. Some I like, some I don’t. The ones I do like, I don’t see all that much. They’re like me. They keep to themselves.
I live in a high-rise building. It has an elevator. I never thought I would be living in a place like this, but I like it.
There are security cameras all over. This was never a concern to me at other places where I’ve lived in the past, but it is now. I guess this comes along with getting older.
The view from my window is Cathedral Basilica—recognized as one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. I’m not a religious person, so I’ve never gone in and don’t know if I ever will, but I like the way it looks from my window. I can appreciate good architecture.
The building has a laundry room. I can wash my clothes anytime I want and that’s usually in the early morning before other tenants start to come in. I don’t like to make conversation when I’m cleaning my clothes.
In February of this year, I saw a roach in my apartment. I called the building management the same day and the next day, Terminix came out and sprayed the apartment. I haven’t seen a bug since. Imagine that. A landlord who actually responded to a problem. I’m not used to that here in Covington, Kentucky.
I guess what I’m trying to say is I like where I’m living. It’s not a perfect building and Covington certainly isn’t a perfect city but what the hell is perfect these days?
I can’t say signing a new lease here is a new lease on life, but it’s more than fine with me. I could do worse and often have. Again, keeping things in perceptive.
